The park ranger told us that we make a decision. A major storm was rolling in and he was going to close the gates for the night. Nobody would be able to enter or leave the park once he did so. I stood with a dozen other strangers who were waiting at the trailhead, pondering whether to embark on the journey to the campsites out on the dunes. We had our permits, but were lacking in courage to spend the night under such ominous clouds. A few people went on the journey and took the risk. Everyone else left the park and made other arrangements. The scenery was miraculous - I had to stay but I was alone and it didn't feel safe to go out into the storm. With nowhere to go, the park ranger was kind enough to let me sleep in my car at the trailhead. I was able to stay late and make photos while dodging what turned out to be a wicked storm.
